MARTIN MERE WILDFOWL CENTRE

During a recent visit to family I was taken to the Martin Mere Wildfowl Centre. At this time of year there are so many birds to see and at 3 o clock they are fed near the hides so it was a truly amazing sight watching them fly in, many of the swans in formation.

The above photographs were taken from the videos I took which I will post during the winter months.

The last few photos were taken from a different hide with rather dirty glass windows that didn't open. Good for keeping warm but not so good for photographs.
The final shot was near the entrance who could resist a shot of Flamingo, interesting to read on the Martin Mere website, that they are classified as near threatened.

  6. Oh my, Joanne, the sheer numbers boggle the brain! Swans, my favorite from childhood growing up across the street from a park called Swan Lake where there were only a handful. So many, in flight, in water, landing, sailing, feeding with other birds. What a dream. :-)

  11. Yes it was amazing and if anyone such as Anna is thinking of visiting try and get there before 3 o'clock when the birds expect to be fed and especially this time of year.
We went into a second hide facing the sun and were treated to a talk on all the different birds that visited and ones that have been tracked around the world. I am not a real bird geek so don't remamber all the names but they have loads of Pink feet I think he said that were too shy to come near the hides but went onto the marsh flats and were fed with potato spoil.
Of course I was glued to what was happening outside the dirty window.
As you can imagine I took masses of photos these were only a tiny few, I ran out of space on my camera and had to rapidly delete many old photos to make room for those sunset shots and the Flamengo.

  15. I love your photos - I just get the swans flying over the garden and the sound when they are flying is lovely. There must have been some noise. Did any of them get too close to you? I had to run one day when a few swans decided that they wanted the food I was eating!
