A MAIZE MAZE

Congratulations to Tom Brown for planning and executing the Maize maze at RHS Wisley. Inspite of the last minute request to change to edible sweet corn you have produced a very pleasing attraction with many twists and turns to throw visitors off course.
My photos do not do full justice to the pathways through but it is well worth a visit if you are in travelling distance of the garden in Surrey UK.
The maize is planted on the site that used to have the old greenhouses which were taken down after the New Millenium Glasshouse was opened.

  1. Oh I love mazes though never on my own, just the thought of 'The Shinning' - scary. A few years ago a fab one was planted in Castlewellan Forest Park, Castlewellan, Northern Ireland. It's a Peace Maze to celebrate the end of the troubles...Anyway Andrew and I just walked into it and we didn't make 1 single wrong turn, we just walked in and out - creepy!!!!

  3. Hi Joanne, we have several of those corn maizes in my area, including one at the farmer's market newly opened. It does seem a little horro movieish, at night anyway. The grandkids might enjoy it though. The farmer's here use it as a Hallowe'en thing, with a pumpkin patch included. A good way to make some extra money.

  5. We usually visit a maze or two in the fall. They are so fun and I can imagine they are a lot of work to plan out.

there is one close to where I live and they take bus fulls of school kids out to it and Like Frances said Halloween they make it extra special. Every year they make it different!

  10. I feel a right old fogey for saying this, but the great benefit of the maize maze to me was that it helped to coral some of the noisier youngsters into one easily avoided area! I hate children I don't know - rather the way some nervous souls are with dogs....

  11. Sorry I didn't manage to reply to you all but thank you for your interesting comments. I had not realised what a common phenomena these Maize's are in USA and Canada.

Emily I have to say I am inclined to agree with you. Of course it is not the childrens fault that they have parents who can't be bothered to control them.
On that visit to Wisley I was amazed at the number of grisley small children being dragged around in sweltering sun, do parents have no brains these days.
